Clearstart’s CEO Ashley Kent's Top 5 Takeaways from HLTH 2024
HLTH 2024 was a whirlwind of ideas, energy, and innovations, and I came back with some key takeaways that could have real implications for how healthcare evolves in the coming years. While the conference (and parties) held plenty of value, if you weren’t able to be there, I’ve pulled together a rundown of what stood out most to me as we think about the future of health tech and where we’re excited about focusing our energy on at Clearstart:
1. Everyone’s Doing AI—But Does Anyone Really Care Anymore?
AI was everywhere, but the magic seems to be wearing off. I lost count of how many pitches started with "We are an AI-powered…" before my brain completely glazed over. It’s as if "AI" has become the background noise at these conferences. In reality, it was the people-centered and product-centered solutions that drew the real attention this year (at least mine). It begs the question—has the AI bubble burst? For startups, maybe it’s time to consider whether you’re solving a real problem or just adding AI for the sake of it.
2. Point Solutions Are Losing Their Shine
If you're building a super niche solution, prepare to get lost in the crowd. Payers and health plans want something that’s fully integrated—end-to-end solutions that don’t feel piecemeal. They’re over chasing 10 different vendors for 10 different needs. The message is clear: healthcare buyers want simplicity and seamless integration. If you’re a startup with a narrow focus, think about how you can expand or partner up to become part of a larger ecosystem.
3. Interoperability is Game-Changing, But Far From Perfect
Interoperability is finally stepping into the limelight. The ability for systems to talk to each other is game-changing… but we’re not quite there yet. There are still gaps where humans have to step in and do what technology can’t. It’s a reminder that the path to perfect interoperability is ongoing—and that “unsexy” human roles still have their place. Sometimes, it’s the bridge between systems that’s just as important as the systems themselves.
4. Mental Health and Behavioral Solutions are (Finally) Getting Their Due
Mental health was front and center, with numerous companies focused on behavioral health, mental wellness, and therapy solutions. The possibilities for integrating mental health with other areas of care are exciting. We’re seeing innovative ways to deliver better care for patients, and this sector shows no signs of slowing down. If you’re in the mental health space, now is the time to push forward. The demand—and interest from payers—is real.
5. A Renewed Energy and Openness from Investors
This year’s energy was different. There was an excitement in the air I haven’t felt in previous years. Investors are starting to show up again, ready to have conversations, but they’re being choosier than ever about who they’ll support. The takeaway here? Investors are looking for the right partners—not just any partner. It’s a great time to approach with confidence if you have a compelling story, a clear path to value, and a team that can deliver.
Final Thoughts
HLTH 2024 confirmed that the healthcare landscape is evolving rapidly, but foundational elements like human connection, simplicity, and authenticity are more important than ever. As we help our healthcare partners carve out their path to growth, these insights will guide us in steering clear of trends that don’t add value and focusing on what really makes a difference.
